We were delighted to welcome Zoe Griffiths, from Think Maths
in the UK, to GEMS World Academy (Singapore) on 29th November.
Think Maths is a team of experienced mathematics speakers who visit schools to run workshops and give talks for a wide range of ages and abilities.
The sessions are interactive, engaging, and show students the wider world of mathematics while giving them a chance to develop invaluable mathematical thinking skills.
Zoe delivered a presentation to all of our Secondary Years students on Shape and Smoke Rings, talking about her favourite shapes and how they connect to the real world.
Amongst them was a one-sided shape known as a Mobius strip (yes, this is physically possible!), as well as a torus, which was demonstrated by giant smoke rings flying across the auditorium!
In addition to this, Zoe ran a number of workshops during the day. Mathematical Magic saw our Grade 7 students deconstructing a card trick by using Mathematics; they went away to wow their friends and families later!
Grade 8 demonstrated impressive collaborative skills to build paper dodecahedrons in the Paper Folding and Problem Solving workshop.
Everyone had an engaging, informative, and fun day!
