It gets increasingly difficult each year to summarise the fantastic things that have taken place during the last academic year. As our school grows so does our faculty, our student body and our parent community. This growth brings with it new ideas and perspectives that continually move us forward and help shape what we want to offer, achieve and develop. For me, this year has been a year of true collaboration throughout our division with all members of the community working together to offer the best possible experiences for our students.
With the holidays now upon us, we take the opportunity to again thank you for your commitment and high engagement to GEMS World Academy (Singapore). As I have stated many times, what defines an outstanding school is not facilities, but rather the people within it. Our students have undertaken a broad range of activities and at all times have been provided excellent opportunities. Parents have engaged throughout an exhaustive range of school events. Staff have contributed energy, passion and a resolute commitment to launch a leading international school in Singapore.
As a teaching faculty, there has been a focus this year on reviewing and building upon our existing curriculum through research, professional discussion and action plans. We have also focused on assessment and the strategies and tools that serve us best in giving students meaningful feedback and support the next steps in their learning journey. The promotion of student agency, giving the students increased voice, choice and ownership of their learning has been a focal point of discussion and is evident in classrooms.
In the Early Years division, the opening of the Little GEMS Nursery has been the major highlight of the year. Though they have their own dedicated learning environment, our youngest students can often be seen on their regular explorations around the school and have become such a valued part of our community.
In the Primary Years, we are very proud of the opportunities that our students have had such as connecting with other students around the world through Skype or by sharing their learning in person with students and adults from other schools in Singapore. The level of activity that the students undertake in response to local and global issues is another highlight for me. From establishing a School Garden and raising awareness during the PYP Exhibition to seeing students take personal action on a daily basis.
Our students and staff have achieved great things this year and I look forward to seeing where this will take us in the year ahead.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Early Years and Primary Years staff for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to the children and families of this school. To those families and students who are leaving, I wish you all the very best for the future and thank you for your contributions to the school during your time at GEMS and for being a part of our GEMS World Academy (Singapore) community. To those families returning in August, I wish you all a very restful and enjoyable holiday break and we look forward to seeing you on August 14 for the start of a new school year.
Safe travels and happy holidays!
