Early Years - Pre-K to K2 (Ages 3-5)

Creating a solid foundation for future learning

In the Early Years at GEMS World Academy (Singapore), we define an outstanding programme as one that lays the foundation for a love of lifelong learning.

The early years of a child's life are the most important for learning and we believe that shaping those first crucial years is a shared responsibility between parents and early childhood educators.

At GEMS World Academy (Singapore) we encourage and build a parent-teacher partnership to provide your child with the best experiences every single day.

Safe and welcoming environment

We know that a child’s emotional and social well-being is shaped from a very early age and we recognize and value this. We also know that children who feel secure are most likely to become the most confident of learners.

In order to facilitate this sense of security, all of our kindergarten classes (Pre-K - KG2) are facilitated by a full-time teacher and a full-time teaching partner.

At GEMS (Singapore) Early Years, we pride ourselves on keeping our class sizes limited to 16 students. Small class size allows teachers to dedicate more time to every child, providing better instruction tailored to the child's individual needs and ensuring higher performance.

Learning in the Early Years

The learning experience that your child will have with us is driven by the pedagogy, beliefs and values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) which is a leading curriculum framework for international primary education.

The (PYP) is designed for children aged 3 - 12 and focused on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

Nurturing independent learning skills, and encouraging every student to take responsibility for their learning, the PYP at GEMS (Singapore) develops students’ academic, social and emotional well being, while simultaneously focusing on international-mindedness and the development of strong personal values.

Here in the Early Years, children are engaged in play-based experiences that allow them to make connections to what they already know, taking them beyond the classroom to wonder and theorize. Alongside teachers, they are co-constructing meaning about the world around them.

Play-based learning allows children to learn through a balanced range of experiences, explore their curiosity and build confidence.

Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (iSTEAM) programs are also integrated into the learning experiences that take place. iSTEAM integration from the earliest age supports technology literacy among children alongside balanced activities.

We believe in a child-centred approach to teaching and learning where children's’ interests, needs and questions drive the learning forward. Children are seen as unique individuals with strengths and abilities that are continually developing and we observe and support this in a developmentally appropriate way.

Providing an engaging, developmentally appropriate and safe learning environment which supports children’s natural curiosity is of utmost importance to us.

At GEMS (Singapore), the Early Years team are constantly responding to children’s ongoing wonderings and interests and modifying the environment accordingly, to provoke higher levels of engagement and reflect children’s shared ownership of the learning spaces.

Examples of the opportunities that our learning environments offer include:

  • Visual Art experiences, Music, Dance and Drama
  • Indoor and outdoor open spaces for discovery, structured and unstructured play
  • Areas for dress-up, performance and sharing
  • Early Years specific indoor spaces for the development of gross motor skills
  • Environments aided by technology supported by outstanding teaching teams
