Visual Arts

Visual Arts is a powerful mode of communication through which students explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Students are stimulated to think and to articulate their thoughts in new ways, and through a variety of media and technologies. Art provides important opportunities for learning, communication and expression: it is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions. Students will use a variety of media to investigate concepts of culture, identity and global perspectives as they develop their practice using the principles and elements of art as a foundation.

Visual Arts programme at GEMS (Singapore) is a study of art media, techniques, artists, art history and art appreciation with a goal to build and improve practical skills in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D assemblage, ceramics, collage, mixed media, digital art and photography as well as related techniques and theories.

Specially designed Nursery and Early Years Arts Programme enables children to explore their ideas, feelings and the world around through a variety of media and materials.  Your child will begin to develop fine motor skills through art activities involving mark making and painting and take part in sensory experiences involving sand, water and playdough. Our hands-on child-centred approach to teaching and learning helps our youngest learners to explore the world around them as well as aid their cognitive development.

In the Primary Years, Visual Arts programme provides a broad range of learning experiences to enable students to learn new skills, develop artistically, make connections and apply their conceptual understandings to invent and create. This creative journey provides students with opportunities to communicate distinctive forms of meaning, develop technical skills, take creative risks, solve problems and visualize consequences. Our young artists work is regularly displayed around the school and students are encouraged to set up their own individual displays throughout the year.

In the Secondary Years, Visual Arts programme stimulates creative reasoning skills and encourages students to understand the context and cultural background of artworks and techniques, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view. Students develop their artistic abilities through creating art in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas. Each year our Secondary Years students have an opportunity to showcase their artworks in a public setting and connect with young talented artists from other international schools during the annual IN Exhibition organised by the Australian High Commission.

From Grade 9 onwards, Visual Arts programme is provided optionally within the Secondary Years Arts programme, with students selecting courses based upon personal strengths and interests.

The Diploma Visual Arts programme is open-ended and offers a unique pathway for each student who embarks on the journey. It is a thought-provoking course in which students develop analytical skills in problem-solving and divergent thinking while working towards technical proficiency and confidence as art-makers. In addition to exploring and comparing visual arts from different perspectives and in different contexts, students are expected to engage in, experiment with and critically reflect upon a wide range of contemporary practices and media.

Our unique programme in partnership with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) provides University Freshman courses and credits, accelerating progress towards a career in anything from Fine Art to Industrial Design and User Experience.

Outside the Art classroom, students may choose to join the Art Club. The Club offers a variety of activities from drawing and creating abstract art to painting murals around the school and designing props for the school musical. We also offer various arts activities led by professional instructors from external providers to further enrich your child’s education. These include Ballet, Jazz, modern dance as well as opportunities to participate in Creative Arts Classes.
